THE DISTRICT
For the purpose of more efficient administration. Rotary has
divided the world into Districts. We are in District 5020 which covers
Vancouver Island and the North West portion of the State of Washington, U.S.A.
On March 1, 2000 the District consisted of 75 Rotary Clubs.
A District Governor for every District is elected annually
at the Rotary International Convention. He is an Officer of Rotary
International. Current Victoria Rotary Club members, who have been elected as
District Governor are Jack Gregory (1983-1984), Doug Lewis (1990-1991) and Ed
Ruggles (1958-1959) in District 707 (Ontario).
The Clubs in each District pay per capital dues to the
District Fund. This may change from year to year depending on the District
budget. The fiscal year of the District runs concurrently with the fiscal year
of the Clubs. In fact the Rotary year at all levels is from July 1 to the
following June 30.
It is the duty of the District Governor to hold a District
Conference each year. At present this is held in either April or May. During
his year as District Governor Nominee he has a District Assembly for the instruction
of incoming Club Presidents, Club Officers, Directors and Committee
Chairpersons.
He also runs a Presidents' Elect Training Seminar (PETS) as
a special training session for incoming Presidents. The District Conference,
like the Rotary International Convention, is open to the families of Rotarians.
By all means make every effort to attend these meetings.
District Governors write Monthly Letters to the Clubs in
their District. These monthly letters include Rotary International information,
messages from the President of Rotary International, articles written by the
District Governor, and information as to what is going on in different clubs
within the district. They also give advance notice of forthcoming district
events. Four copies of the monthly letter are sent to each club for use by the
Club President, Club Secretary, the President Elect and the Club Bulletin
editor. It is also sent to Chairpersons and members of District Committees. The
District Governor's letter records the average attendance of each Club in the
District and awards are given in several categories based on this record. All
of the above information is also available on the Rotary Web Page on the
internet.
The District Governor makes an official visit, to each Club
in the District. On the agreed date he confers with the Club President and
Secretary concerning details of Club operations. This is followed by a Club
Assembly, open to all members of the Club, at which time each committee
Chairperson reviews the activities of his or her committee.
