WHAT THE ROTARY FOUNDATIONS SUPPORT
The Rotary Foundation operates internationally in the
following areas:
EDUCATION
Education is a major concern of Rotary at an international
as well as at a community level. Every club contributes to the Rotary Foundation
and every club may submit candidates for the many Scholarships:
Graduate Scholarships
Undergraduate Scholarships
Vocational Scholarships
Teacher of the Handicapped
Scholarships
Journalism Scholarships
These scholarships are for a year's study in a country other
than the candidate's own country and provide for all academic fees plus
round-trip transportation costs, room and board, books, laboratory fees and
educational supplies.
Group Study Exchange is another Rotary Foundation program,
enabling teams of young business and professional persons in different
countries to exchange visits of several weeks duration, to develop
international friendships, to learn differing ideas, ways of life, and other
business and professional practices. Each of two paired Rotary districts in
different parts of the world sends and receives a team during a Rotary year.
Victoria has both sponsored and received Foundation Fellows
and participated in the reception and sending of a Group Study Exchange team.
On three occasions, one of our members has served as a Group Leader with an
exchange team.
HEALTH, HUNGER AND HUMANITIES GRANTS (3H GRANTS)
The trustees of The Rotary Foundation will consider requests
from clubs for
grants towards projects in developing countries that improve
the health, eliminate hunger or improve the social fabric of the people.
SPECIAL GRANTS
In a similar manner the Trustees of The Rotary Foundationwill consider requests from
clubs or districts for grants for special projects in developing countries. Two
clubs, one in a donor district and the other in a receiving district, work
jointly on a project in the receiving district. If the project satisfies the
criteria set by the Trustees, the Foundation will match the contribution of the
donor district.
The Rotary Club of Victoria B.C. Foundation was established
in 1974 as a charitable foundation under the Provincial Societies Act. The
purpose of operating the Foundation is to allow donations to be made to
charities in the local community, with the income tax relief provided under the
Income Tax Act. The Foundation incurs no expenses of any kind so every dollar
donated is used for the intended purpose.
The
objectives and purposes of the Foundation are as follows;
a) the
relief of poverty;
b) the
advancement of education;
c) the
advancement of medical research and treatment;
d) other
purposes of a charitable nature, beneficial to the
community as a
whole.
Each year all interest earned is donated by the Board of
Directors of the Rotary Club of Victoria to approved charities and
organizations. Interest income for the year ending 30th April 2000 was
approximately $20,000.00.
The Foundation is nurtured by the Advisory Committee. The
current chairperson is Past President Wayne Morson who can be contacted for
further information.
