Trip Down Under - Sept 2010
Day 40 - Dunedin Otago Peninsula

Waiwhakakehe Bay Cliff Rookeries

On the road at 9 am to go up the Otago Peninsula. We drove on a slow twisty road along the coast to the area where there are rookeries for many birds, including albatrosses. Then we backtracked and got on a small (50 ft?) boat for a 1-hour tour. We cruised back out to the headland and could see albatrosses, shags and tern nesting areas. Also saw sea lions on the rocks. The boat then headed to where the seabirds were feeding - flying low over the water searching for food - shearwaters, petrols, kestrels, and several albatrosses. One Northern Royal albatross was in the distance flying and then we saw a Salvins Albatross sitting on the water and got quite close.

After the cruise we went to the Yellow-eyed Penguin Reserve where we were able to see the area they are protecting to allow the endangered penguin to establish a viable colony. They are a solitary penguin which is unusual - we saw one on an egg from a blind, and also saw a sea lion predator which had probably killed a couple of penguins in the past year. In the rehab area we saw a Blue penguin.

On the way back we stopped and toured the gardens at Larnach Castle.
