Day Trip to K'uuna Llnagaay (Skedans)

| Haida Gwaii & Inside Passage - 2022-08
Scenes around the old Haida village at K'uuna Llnagaay. You can see the section at the top of the totem pole where the bent wood box with remains was placed. Remains of the dead chief were left to mummify (intestines removed) above ground for some time before being placed in a fetal position in the box. Bodies were not buried as the spirit would be trapped in the ground and not free to be reincarnated. Emily Carr had visited this village and painted totem poles in the day. Now the poles - mortuary poles - had fallen. We saw remains of long houses with sunken sections. James, our guide, had been a watchman. The trip back was a bit rough as we bounced off the tops of 2-foot waves. |
