The Erechtheion The temple, built between 421 and 407 BC, was dedicated to Athena Polias (Protectress of the City) and Poseidon Erechtheus. One of its porches is supported by the famous "Porch of the Maidens", with six draped female figures (caryatids) as supporting columns. Within the foundations of the building lived the sacred snake of the temple, which represented the spirit of the mythical king of Athens, Cecrops, whose well-being was thought essential for the safety of the city. |
